Who uses Recharge and why subscriptions are different
Recharge is a subscription platform for Shopify merchants, used by brands selling replenishable products such as coffee, supplements, skincare and pet food, as well as curated boxes. Customers subscribe at checkout and then manage their plan in a customer portal, where Recharge lets them skip a delivery, swap a product, pause, or change how often it arrives.
That flexibility is good for retention and hard on a warehouse. The order you will be packing next month is not fixed until the renewal actually runs, and a large share of your volume can land together if many subscribers joined on similar dates.
What subscription orders demand of fulfilment
In Recharge's model, a charge is the upcoming transaction with all its line items, and an order is created once that charge is processed successfully. Prepaid plans work differently: one charge can generate several orders to be shipped over time. Either way, the warehouse sees a stream of renewal orders on each billing run, and every one needs the right items in it.
Recharge also supports bundles and build-a-box products, where the subscriber chooses the contents. Those orders need careful picking because two boxes with the same name can hold completely different items. Where the box is fixed, we can kit it in advance so each renewal is a single pick; where it is customer-built, we pick line by line and check before sealing.
Unboxing matters more for subscribers than for one-off buyers, because the box arrives again and again. Custom packaging and inserts keep the experience consistent, and reliable dispatch keeps skips and cancellations down.
How Recharge renewals reach Smart
Renewal orders are placed in your Shopify store, and from there they flow into our system automatically alongside your one-off orders, drawing on the same stock pool. We pick, pack and ship each one tracked with proof of delivery. Same-day dispatch applies to orders placed before 9pm; cut-offs vary by carrier, service and daily order profile.
Tracking and fulfilled status sync back to Shopify, where your customers and your Recharge portal expect to see them, and stock levels sync back so you can plan for the next billing run. Live stock in the client portal shows whether you hold enough to cover the subscribers due to renew.
