The brands that run on Shopify, and what they outgrow
Shopify is a hosted commerce platform, so most of the brands we meet on it started lean: a founder packing from a spare room or a small unit, a theme, a handful of apps and a growing list of SKUs. The platform keeps up with that growth easily. The packing bench usually doesn't.
The tipping point tends to be a product drop, a creator post or the run-up to Christmas, when order volume jumps faster than anyone can hire. At that stage the question stops being how to sell more and becomes how to ship every order correctly without the founder living in the stockroom.
What Shopify shoppers expect once they press Buy
Shopify customers get an order status page and a shipping confirmation once an order is marked fulfilled, so they notice quickly when nothing has happened. Delays show up as where-is-my-order emails, chargebacks and poor reviews long before they show up in a report.
Direct-to-consumer brands also sell the unboxing. Branded mailers, printed inserts, sample sachets and bundles built from several variants are normal on Shopify, and they have to be packed the same way on the thousandth order as on the first. We pick and pack to your spec with 99.9% pick and pack accuracy, and orders placed before 9pm go out the same day (cut-offs vary by carrier, service and daily order profile).
Launches matter too. When a drop sells through in an afternoon, stock needs to be on the shelf, counted and ready to pick before the email goes out, not still on a pallet in goods-in.
How a Shopify order reaches our warehouse and comes back fulfilled
Shopify treats an outside warehouse as a fulfilment service with its own location. Inventory is tracked separately for each location, and when an order routed to that location is paid, Shopify sends a fulfilment request to the service rather than you having to forward anything.
In practice that means paid orders drop into our system on their own. We pick and pack, choose the carrier for that parcel, and send the tracking number back so Shopify marks the order fulfilled and your customer gets their shipping email. Stock counts from our shelves sync back to your Smart location, so the storefront stops selling what we no longer hold.
If you also sell from a shop or keep some stock elsewhere, those stay as separate Shopify locations. Our location simply reflects what is physically in Scunthorpe, checked in against your purchase orders and visible in the client portal.
Shopify alongside marketplaces and wholesale
Plenty of Shopify brands also sell on Amazon, TikTok Shop or to independent retailers. We run those channels from the same stock pool as your Shopify store, so a wholesale carton order and a single DTC parcel draw on one set of numbers, and you get one named contact, Andy Paine, rather than a support queue.
