eBay started as an auction site, and auctions still run, but most business sellers on eBay.co.uk list at a fixed price with Buy It Now, often with Best Offer switched on. The mix is unusually wide: car parts and tools next to trainers, refurbished tech, collectables, homeware and pet supplies. Many sellers run variation listings, one listing carrying every size and colour of a product, with a quantity behind each option.
That breadth is why eBay businesses tend to have long SKU lists and uneven sales: a few lines sell every day and hundreds sell occasionally. Keeping accurate stock across all of them, and posting each order promptly, is where a home or small-unit operation starts to creak.
Dispatch time, tracking and eBay's seller standards
eBay's seller standards policy makes sellers responsible for posting items within their stated dispatch time. What decides whether an account falls below standard is the transaction defect rate and the number of cases closed without seller resolution. A high late delivery rate on its own won't do that, but it does count against Top Rated Seller status.
The estimated delivery date buyers see is built from your handling time, the postage services you offer, your past delivery performance and the carriers' own performance. eBay recommends a short handling time, and lets sellers offering same-day handling set a cut-off time in postage preferences.
Tracking is the seller's evidence. Uploading a tracking number marks the item as dispatched, and eBay removes a late delivery automatically when the acceptance scan falls within your handling time or the item reached the buyer by the estimated date. Valid tracking, uploaded as soon as the parcel leaves, is the best protection you have.
